GENOCIDE MUSEUMS IN RWANDA

Genocide museums in Rwanda

GENOCIDE MUSEUM IN RWANDA.

Did you know that dark tourism is possible in Rwanda?

Dark tourism is a type of tourism where travellers visit historical places of long-suffering and death. And this means that Kigali Genocide museum is the best destination for this kind of experience.

The Genocide Museum in Rwanda is also referred to as the Kigali or Rwanda genocide memorial centre; located in the suburb of Gisozi taking only about 10 minutes from Kigali City Centre. It is where over 250,000 people were buried in memory of the 1994 Rwanda genocide which happened between the Tutsi and Hutu.

While on your safari, do not miss out on this great opportunity to discover Rwanda’s political scene and adventure through learning. At the museum, there is a wall indicating names of those involved in the incident and another hall which is designed for a movie showing how this horrible incident happened.

The memorial gardens provide a place for quiet contemplation about the history of the terrible Genocide against the Tutsi. Sitting or walking in the gardens is a rewarding moment.

There are videos which illustrate some of the survivors of this mass tribute and the interviews are good as learning objections, strange and sad.

Move from one room to another as you listen to the sad stories being told by local experienced guides, recorded messages as well as videos.

Rwanda was colonised by Belgians around the 1930s and this government is allegedly responsible for causing tribal wars between the Tutsi and Hutus.

Another room is filled with photos and personal messages about the person in the photo written on by the loved ones like ‘’you will always live to be remembered’’.

The centre is managed by Aegis Trust, in conjunction with National Commission for the Fight against Genocide. Aegis Trust is an NGO from British which runs campaigns to prevent genocide in the whole world and it is based in the United Kingdom.

A genocide museum visit is memorable as you get absorbed with beautiful museum displays, take a rose (by donation) to leave on one of the vast concrete slabs outside that cover the mass graves. There's also a wall of names, a rose garden, a gift shop and a pleasant cafe serving good coffee, lunch buffets, snacks and fresh juice. This is an ideal place to reflect and relax before facing the outside world again.

There is more to discover while at this place and this means that spending half a day on your visit is something you require in your lifetime. After all that story and adventure, it doesn’t mean that Rwanda is not safe to visit again.

Rwanda is considered to be among the safest countries in Africa with good governance that promotes peace and security, at the same time fighting tribal wars and promoting equality for all natives.

Kigali Genocide Museum can be visited while on any other safari maybe gorilla trekking or a safari to the lush Nyungwe forest. This means that you can “kill two birds with one stone” by taking a safari of your choice and adding a visit to this memorial centre.

Best time to visit Kigali Genocide Museum.

Most travellers prefer taking a safari during dry season which starts in December until Mid - February and June to September. But this should not be a worry on your side when planning a tour to Kigali Genocide memorial Centre.

Therefore you can visit this memorial centre even in rainy season, because the activity happens in the interior. This means that there is no weather interference while taking part in a tour to these memorial grounds.
