WILDEBEEST MIGRATION IN TANZANIA

Wildebeest migration in Tanzania

WILDEBEEST MIGRATION IN TANZANIA.

The wildebeest migration is one of the seven wonders in Africa where millions of wildebeests with thousands of gazelles and zebras migrate from Tanzania in Serengeti national park northwards to Kenya in Masai Mara national reserve as they search for fresh pastures and freshwater.

Tanzania offers a lot to discover and enjoy while on your safari to this beautiful country. Due to the prevailing peace and security, tourism has been at its peak spearheaded by a good road network, good governance, views to die for, hospitable people and world class facilities.

Wildlife is one of the main attractions in Tanzania and this has been due to conservation measures put in place by the government of Tanzania which has established conservation areas, national parks and game reserves. This country has got the highest number of national parks compared to her neighbours like Kenya and Uganda.

The wildebeest migration in Tanzania happens annually, starting from Serengeti national park plains and crosses to Masai Mara national reserve and the cycle continues. The great migration starts after giving birth and it is by choice. Some tend to remain in their home area while others migrate.

A game drive in Serengeti national park is the best option to witness the migration of wildebeests. Spot them as they cross rivers in the parks, some of them eaten by crocodiles and other predators like lions, leopards and cheetahs take a bite while on the move. But also, a ballooning safari can reward you with the best memory as you take an eagle eye while viewing the plains of Serengeti.

The migration is mainly affected by the rain patterns to or from the destination of the migration as they search for fresh water and pastures to survive. And like humans, others migrate due to peer groups, excitement and band wagon.

While on the search for these wildebeests, you will view other wildlife like bird species, mammals like the big five animals (lion, elephant, Rhino, buffalo and leopard), hippos and crocodiles, warthogs, different antelopes like bushbucks, waterbucks, Jackson hartebeests, Oribis among others, jackals and olive baboons.

It is recorded by researchers that wildebeests spend most of their time in Serengeti compared to the Masai Mara national reserve in Kenya which means that there are higher chances of spotting the migration while on your safari in Serengeti national park.

Watching the wildebeests running up and down as they migrate is an amazing adventure you need not miss on your safari to Africa and this gives an unforgettable lifetime experience.

When to spot the great migration in Tanzania - Serengeti National Park?

Between November and December months, wildebeests are spotted in areas of Ndutu south of Serengeti national park and north of Ngorongoro crater. They spend most of their time here from January to March and in April, they start migrating northwards to Masai Mara in Kenya.
