Chimpanzee Tracking Uganda

Meet Our Closest
Wild Relatives

Uganda harbours over 5,000 wild chimpanzees — the highest concentration in East Africa. In Kibale Forest's cathedral-green canopy, you will hear them before you see them: the pant-hoots and drumming that signal a wild community going about its ancient day.

Uganda: The Primate Capital of the World

Chimpanzees share 98.7% of their DNA with humans. That number stops being abstract the moment you step into Kibale Forest and a wild chimp locks eyes with you from ten metres away, curious, intelligent, entirely unimpressed. It is one of the most affecting encounters in nature.

Uganda's Kibale Forest National Park — a 795 km² mosaic of tropical rainforest and savanna — is home to an extraordinary 1,450 chimpanzees and 12 other primate species, making it the undisputed primate capital of the world. Beyond Kibale, Uganda offers three additional habituated chimp sites, each with its own character: the dramatic gorge at Kyambura, the great mahogany stands of Budongo, and the quieter Kalinzu Forest Reserve.

At Nile Abenteuer Safaris, our chimpanzee tracking experiences are permit-controlled, conservation-positive, and personally guided by experts who have spent years in these forests. You leave with memories. The chimps barely notice you've gone.

What Happens on a Chimp Trek

From the first pant-hoot echo to the walk back through dappled light, every hour in the forest is a story. Here is how the day unfolds.

01
Pre-Dawn Briefing
You arrive at Kanyanchu Visitor Centre at 7:00 AM for a thorough briefing from a Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger. Group size is maximum 8 people. Your guide explains chimp behaviour, photography rules, and how to move quietly in the forest.
02
Forest Tracking
Trackers radio ahead to locate the chimp community. You follow your guide along forest trails — listening for drumming, watching for swinging branches overhead. The search itself is part of the experience: you will pass colobus monkeys, forest birds, and ancient fig trees.
03
The Encounter
You spend one hour with the habituated community (standard trek) or a full day (habituation experience). Watch chimps feeding on figs, grooming each other, chasing, vocalising. The 7-metre distance rule applies — though chimps are not always aware of this rule.
04
Afternoon Options
After the morning trek, your afternoon is full of choice. The Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk (2 hours, 8 primate species) is our most recommended add-on. Optional afternoon trek, crater lake walk by bicycle, or simply rest at your lodge listening to the forest.
05
Evening at the Lodge
As light fades through the canopy, chimps build their night nests high in the trees. Your evening is spent at a Kibale forest lodge — many overlook the trees, and on good evenings you will hear the chimps calling their goodnights across the canopy.
06
Physical Preparation
Standard chimp treks are moderate — 2 to 4 hours of walking on forest paths. Sturdy walking boots with ankle support, long-sleeved clothing (green or brown tones), insect repellent, and a rain jacket are essential. A porter ($10–15) is strongly recommended and supports the local community.

Best Time for Chimpanzee Tracking in Uganda

The good news: Uganda's chimps can be tracked year-round. The choice of season comes down to trail conditions, crowd levels, and your photography priorities.

Dry Season
June – September & December – February

The most popular trekking months. Trails are drier and firmer, making for a more comfortable hike. Chimps tend to spend more time in lower canopy where they are easier to observe and photograph.

  • Best trail conditions — less mud, easier walking
  • Longer daily chimp sightings in lower canopy
  • Higher permit demand — book 6–9 months in advance
  • Peak prices across most lodges
Green Season
March – May & October – November

The forest is at its most lush and photogenic. Fewer visitors, lower lodge rates, and excellent birding. Chimps are highly active — fruit is abundant and communities are often louder and more animated.

  • Dramatic forest scenery — vivid greens, dramatic light
  • Fewer tourists — more intimate experience
  • Lower season lodge pricing
  • Trails can be muddy — good boots essential
Year-Round
Any Month — Uganda's Chimps Are Always There

Unlike some wildlife experiences that depend on migration or specific seasons, chimpanzee tracking in Uganda operates every day of the year with a consistently high encounter success rate. Kibale's habituated communities are located year-round, and the 95%+ encounter rate holds regardless of season. The question is not whether you will see chimps — but in what conditions you prefer to do it.

Chimpanzee Tracking FAQ

How much does chimpanzee tracking cost in Uganda in 2025/2026?
The standard chimpanzee trekking permit at Kibale Forest costs $250 per person for foreign non-residents, as set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Our all-inclusive 3-day Kibale package (transport, accommodation, meals, guide, and permit) starts from $600 per person. The Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (a full day with semi-habituated chimps alongside researchers) starts from $900. Budongo and Kalinzu permit fees are significantly lower at approximately $30 per person.
What is the difference between chimpanzee trekking and chimpanzee habituation?
The standard chimpanzee trek allows you one hour with a fully habituated community — the chimps are entirely comfortable with human presence and continue their natural behaviour. The Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX) is a full-day experience (dawn to dusk) with a semi-habituated group that is still being acclimatised to humans alongside UWA researchers. You witness the complete daily cycle — nesting, feeding, social interaction, mating — and gain a far deeper understanding of chimp life. Only 4 visitors per day are permitted for habituation. We recommend it for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone wanting a truly exceptional experience.
Which is the best site for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda?
Kibale Forest National Park is Uganda's premier chimp trekking destination — the highest concentration of chimps in East Africa, the best habituation programme, and the highest encounter success rate (consistently above 90%). For those combining chimps with a Queen Elizabeth NP safari, Kyambura Gorge adds dramatic scenery to the experience. Budongo Forest pairs perfectly with a Murchison Falls safari. Kalinzu is excellent for budget travellers or those wanting a crowd-free forest. We match you to the right site based on your full itinerary.
Can I combine chimpanzee trekking with gorilla trekking in Uganda?
Absolutely — and we strongly recommend it. Our most popular packages combine chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest with gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The two parks are approximately five hours apart by road, making a single journey covering both entirely practical from 5 days upward. Uganda is the only country in the world where you can track both species in a single trip. We handle all permits, transport, and accommodation between both parks. Our combo packages start from $2,200 per person with all permits included.
How physically demanding is chimpanzee trekking?
Standard chimp trekking is moderate in difficulty — typically 2 to 4 hours of walking on forest paths with some uneven terrain and occasional mud. Most reasonably fit travellers between 15 and 75 years old manage it comfortably. Hiring a porter ($10–15, strongly recommended) significantly reduces fatigue and supports the local community. The Chimp Habituation Experience is more demanding due to the full-day duration — good physical fitness is recommended. There is no minimum age for chimp trekking (unlike gorilla trekking, which requires participants to be 15+).
When is the best time to visit Uganda for chimpanzee trekking?
Chimpanzee tracking operates year-round — you can see the chimps in every month. The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer the most comfortable trekking conditions with firmer trails and easier walking. The green seasons (March–May and October–November) bring lush forest scenery, fewer tourists, lower lodge prices, and highly active, vocal chimp communities. Many photographers prefer the green season for the dramatic forest light. If your priority is trail comfort: come dry season. If your priority is solitude and forest atmosphere: green season is exceptional.
Are children allowed on chimpanzee treks?
Yes — unlike mountain gorilla trekking (which requires participants to be at least 15 years old), there is no minimum age for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda. Children are welcome, provided they can walk the trail distance and follow the guide's instructions quietly. We recommend the standard Kibale trek (not habituation) for families with younger children, as it is shorter and less physically demanding. Our family safari packages combine chimp trekking with wildlife game drives at Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth NP for a complete multi-generational experience.
How do I book a chimpanzee trekking permit through Nile Abenteuer Safaris?
We handle the entire permit booking process on your behalf. Once you confirm your safari package and dates, we apply to the Uganda Wildlife Authority for your permit(s), secure your lodge accommodation, and arrange all transport between parks. You pay a single package price — no separate permit applications or upfront payments to UWA required. We recommend confirming your booking at least 3–6 months in advance for dry season dates, as Kibale permits (limited to 32 per day) sell out quickly. Contact us via the form below, by email at info@nileabenteuer.com, or on WhatsApp at +256 752 397520.
