Meet Our Closest
Wild Relatives
Uganda harbours over 5,000 wild chimpanzees — the highest concentration in East Africa. In Kibale Forest's cathedral-green canopy, you will hear them before you see them: the pant-hoots and drumming that signal a wild community going about its ancient day.
Uganda: The Primate Capital of the World
Chimpanzees share 98.7% of their DNA with humans. That number stops being abstract the moment you step into Kibale Forest and a wild chimp locks eyes with you from ten metres away, curious, intelligent, entirely unimpressed. It is one of the most affecting encounters in nature.
Uganda's Kibale Forest National Park — a 795 km² mosaic of tropical rainforest and savanna — is home to an extraordinary 1,450 chimpanzees and 12 other primate species, making it the undisputed primate capital of the world. Beyond Kibale, Uganda offers three additional habituated chimp sites, each with its own character: the dramatic gorge at Kyambura, the great mahogany stands of Budongo, and the quieter Kalinzu Forest Reserve.
At Nile Abenteuer Safaris, our chimpanzee tracking experiences are permit-controlled, conservation-positive, and personally guided by experts who have spent years in these forests. You leave with memories. The chimps barely notice you've gone.
Where to Track Chimpanzees in Uganda
Uganda offers four distinct habituated chimpanzee sites — each in a different ecosystem, each with its own permit, personality, and story.

Combine Chimps with Gorilla Trekking
Uganda is the only country on Earth where you can track both chimpanzees and mountain gorillas in a single journey. Our most popular safari category.
"Kibale Forest is approximately five hours from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park by road — making a single trip covering both chimpanzees and mountain gorillas entirely practical. It is the most emotionally powerful combination in African safari travel."

Best Time for Chimpanzee Tracking in Uganda
The good news: Uganda's chimps can be tracked year-round. The choice of season comes down to trail conditions, crowd levels, and your photography priorities.
The most popular trekking months. Trails are drier and firmer, making for a more comfortable hike. Chimps tend to spend more time in lower canopy where they are easier to observe and photograph.
- Best trail conditions — less mud, easier walking
- Longer daily chimp sightings in lower canopy
- Higher permit demand — book 6–9 months in advance
- Peak prices across most lodges
The forest is at its most lush and photogenic. Fewer visitors, lower lodge rates, and excellent birding. Chimps are highly active — fruit is abundant and communities are often louder and more animated.
- Dramatic forest scenery — vivid greens, dramatic light
- Fewer tourists — more intimate experience
- Lower season lodge pricing
- Trails can be muddy — good boots essential
Unlike some wildlife experiences that depend on migration or specific seasons, chimpanzee tracking in Uganda operates every day of the year with a consistently high encounter success rate. Kibale's habituated communities are located year-round, and the 95%+ encounter rate holds regardless of season. The question is not whether you will see chimps — but in what conditions you prefer to do it.
