Uganda is the single best destination on earth for gorilla trekking. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, both in Uganda's dramatic southwestern highlands, are home to more than 500 mountain gorillas — more than half of the estimated 1,063 remaining on the planet.
Mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) exist only in the Virunga Massif and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — there are no mountain gorillas in captivity anywhere in the world. To see them, you must come here.

Six key facts that shape your gorilla trekking experience — from logistics to what to expect on the day.
Gorilla Permit — USD 800 Per Person
Each gorilla trekking permit is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and costs USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents. The permit grants you one visit to a habituated gorilla family, with a maximum group size of 8 visitors per family per day. Permits must be booked in advance — peak season often sells out months ahead. Nile Abenteuer secures your permits as part of your package: you do not arrange them separately.
1 to 8 Hours — All Fitness Levels Welcome
Gorilla trekking begins at the park gate at 7:30 AM with a safety briefing. Trek duration depends on where the gorilla family is that morning — rangers track their location from dawn. Walks range from 1 to 8 hours. All terrain is forest — expect mud, roots, and steep hillsides. Porter hire (highly recommended, ~USD 15) is available at the gate. Most guests of moderate fitness complete the trek without difficulty.
60 Minutes With the Family
Once you locate the gorilla family, you have exactly 60 minutes with them — this is regulated strictly to minimise disturbance to the gorillas. In that hour, you may observe silverbacks, females, juveniles, and infants at distances sometimes as close as 5 metres. Photography is permitted (no flash). Guides will brief you on safe behaviour: move slowly, speak quietly, and follow every instruction immediately.
Minimum Age 15 — Health Screening at Gate
Trekkers must be at least 15 years old. If you have cold, flu, or any respiratory illness on the day, you will not be permitted to enter — gorillas are highly susceptible to human diseases. You must carry a face mask (provided in your trekking briefing). Guests with pre-existing health conditions should consult a physician before booking. Bwindi or Mgahinga — Southwest Uganda
Both gorilla parks are located in Uganda's southwestern highlands, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the primary destination with 4 trekking sectors and 19 habituated gorilla families. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is smaller but offers a striking volcanic landscape backdrop. From Entebbe/Kampala, the drive to Bwindi takes 7–9 hours (or a 45-min charter flight to Kisoro).
Your Permit Funds Gorilla Conservation
A portion of every permit fee is reinvested directly into gorilla conservation and local community programmes by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. By choosing to trek, you actively contribute to the protection of the species. Buhoma Sector
The original and most accessible trekking sector, Buhoma is located in the northern part of Bwindi and is the entry point for the majority of gorilla trekking visitors. Home to multiple habituated gorilla families, including the famous Mubare family — the first to be habituated in Uganda in 1993.

Rushaga Sector
Located in the southern part of Bwindi, Rushaga has the highest number of habituated gorilla families of any sector. It is also the only place in the world where you can participate in gorilla habituation experience (GHEX) — spending 4 hours with a semi-habituated family in the process of becoming accustomed to humans, for a more intimate and exclusive encounter.

Ruhija Sector
The highest-altitude sector of Bwindi, Ruhija sits at around 2,400m and offers some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the park. It is a paradise for birdwatchers — over 350 species have been recorded here, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics. The gorilla trekking here can be more physically demanding but often yields remarkably peaceful encounters.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Uganda's smallest national park, Mgahinga offers gorilla trekking against the spectacular backdrop of the Virunga volcanoes — the same range that straddles the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC. The Nyakagezi gorilla family is habituated and resident. Mgahinga also offers the rare opportunity to track the golden monkey, found only in the Virungas.

Your Gorilla Trek Day
What Happens, Hour by Hour
So you know exactly what to expect — and can simply be present when the moment arrives.
Pre-Dawn Departure from Your Lodge
Your Nile Abenteuer guide collects you from your lodge well before sunrise. You will drive to the sector park gate — typically a 20 to 40 minute journey through hillside communities waking to morning light. A packed breakfast or hot tea may be served at the lodge before departure.
Safety Briefing and Group Assembly
At the gate, UWA rangers conduct a mandatory briefing covering gorilla behaviour, trail etiquette, health requirements, and emergency procedures. You are assigned to your gorilla family group (maximum 8 visitors). This is when porters can be hired — a highly recommended option for any terrain that might challenge you.
The Trek Begins
Rangers who tracked the family since dawn radio ahead with the family's location. Your group enters the forest. Trails range from gentle paths to steep, root-covered hillsides through dense vegetation. The forest itself is extraordinary — ancient trees, birdlife, mist between the canopy, fresh mountain air. Most guests report that the trek is beautiful regardless of the destination.
You Find the Gorillas
Your guide signals — the family is ahead. You put away your walking sticks, check your camera settings, and move forward quietly. Suddenly, through the undergrowth, a dark shape. Then another. The family comes into view — a silverback resting, juveniles playing, a mother nursing an infant. Nothing prepares you for the scale of a silverback at close range, or the uncanny intelligence in a gorilla's eyes.
An Hour That Changes Everything
Your 60 minutes begins when the lead ranger starts the timer. Observe, photograph, and absorb every detail. Stay within 7 metres (or as directed by rangers — gorillas sometimes approach closer). Speak softly. Move slowly. Your guide will name each family member and explain their personalities and hierarchy. When your hour ends, you retrace your steps to the gate — changed, in some quiet way, forever.
Certificate, Lunch, and Reflection
Back at the gate, the UWA ranger presents your official gorilla trekking certificate. Your Nile Abenteuer guide has arranged a post-trek lunch — typically at your lodge or a nearby restaurant. This afternoon is yours to rest, explore the local community, or continue your safari itinerary toward the next destination.
Gorilla Permit Booking
We Secure Your Permit — You Simply Arrive
Gorilla permits are limited by Uganda Wildlife Authority to protect the gorillas from over-visitation. Each habituated family hosts a maximum of 8 visitors per day. Bwindi and Mgahinga combined have around 19 habituated families — meaning roughly 152 permits are available daily across all sectors and categories.
During high season (June–September and December–February), permits are frequently sold out several months in advance. Nile Abenteuer holds permit allocations and manages the booking process with UWA on your behalf. Your permit is included in all Nile Abenteuer gorilla trekking packages.
Permits are non-refundable but may be rescheduled in certain circumstances (illness, emergencies). We recommend combining permit booking with comprehensive travel insurance.

How to Be Physically and Practically Ready
Gorilla trekking is achievable for most healthy adults — but preparation makes it more enjoyable and increases your confidence in the forest.
Physical Fitness
You do not need to be an athlete. Regular walking on hilly terrain for 4–6 weeks before your trip is the best preparation. Aim for 45–60 minute walks with some elevation change several times per week. Those with knee or joint issues should consult a physician — the descents can be steep and uneven. Trekking poles are permitted and recommended.
Clothing and Footwear
Wear long-sleeve shirts and long trousers in dark or earth tones (avoid bright colours and white, which can disturb the gorillas). Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support are essential — trails are often wet and muddy. Gaiters are highly recommended. A light waterproof jacket is essential even in dry season, as the forest generates its own weather at altitude.
Altitude and Health
Bwindi sits at roughly 1,600–2,400m above sea level. Most visitors acclimatise without difficulty after a day of rest. Stay well hydrated in the days before your trek. All Nile Abenteuer guests are covered by AMREF Flying Doctors emergency medical evacuation. Carry personal prescription medication and basic first aid in your daypack.
Porter Hire
Hiring a local porter at the park gate is strongly recommended — not because the trail is impossibly hard, but because porters are local community members whose livelihoods depend on conservation tourism. Your porter will carry your daypack, assist with steep terrain, and enhance your experience. Typical cost is USD 10–20. We encourage guests to tip generously.
Photography
Bring a camera with a 200–400mm zoom lens for close-up shots without needing to approach too closely. No flash photography is permitted — it distresses the gorillas. Low-light forest conditions may require a camera body with good ISO performance. Smartphone photography is excellent in good light and more discreet. Leave flash attachments at the lodge.
Health Screening
You will be asked about your health status at the briefing. If you have a cold, flu, or respiratory infection, you will not be permitted to trek — this rule is strictly enforced to protect the gorillas from human disease transmission. Pack hand sanitiser and wear your mask as directed. Nile Abenteuer can help arrange a date change in case of illness where permits allow.
