3-Day Itinerary — Day by Day
Day 1
Kampala / Entebbe → Kalinzu Forest Reserve (420 km)
Depart Kampala southwest on the Kampala–Mbarara highway, continuing through Mbarara and south toward the Queen Elizabeth NP area. Total drive approximately 420 km, 6–7 hours. Arrive at your basic but comfortable forest guesthouse or camp near Kalinzu. Briefing with your forest guide. Dinner and early overnight.
Day 2
CHIMP TRACKING — Kalinzu Forest (Morning) + Forest Walk (Afternoon)
Morning: Kalinzu Chimp Trek. Early breakfast. Meet your Kalinzu Forest Reserve guide — local naturalists with deep knowledge of this forest's chimpanzee communities. Set off into the mahogany forest. Kalinzu is less managed than Kibale — tracking feels more authentic, more adventurous. The chimps here are habituated but encountered far less frequently by tourists, meaning their behaviour is more natural.
Spend your permitted time with the Kalinzu chimpanzees — typically encountered in fruit trees, on the forest floor, or calling from the canopy. Because the forest sees far fewer visitors, the encounters are unhurried and deeply atmospheric.
Afternoon: Kalinzu Forest Nature Walk. A slower-paced guided walk through Kalinzu's forest, targeting black-and-white colobus monkeys (abundant in Kalinzu), red-tailed monkeys, L'Hoest's monkeys, and birds. Kalinzu is excellent for forest hornbills and sunbirds. Your guide explains the forest ecology and medicinal plant uses of the local Batooro people.
Day 3
Forest Morning → Return Kampala / Entebbe (420 km)
Morning forest walk or rest. Depart mid-morning for the long return drive to Kampala or Entebbe (420 km, 6–7 hours). Arrive by evening.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Kalinzu so much cheaper than Kibale?
Kalinzu Forest Reserve is a government-managed reserve (not a national park) with a lower UWA permit fee ($30 vs $250 at Kibale). Infrastructure is basic — no visitor centre or luxury lodges — but the chimpanzees are habituated and the tracking experience is genuine. For budget travellers, Kalinzu offers the same core experience (tracking wild chimps) at a fraction of Kibale's cost.
Are there as many chimps in Kalinzu?
Kalinzu has a smaller chimp population than Kibale (approximately 300 individuals vs 1,500 at Kibale), and fewer habituated groups. Encounter rates are good but slightly lower than Kibale's 95%+. Your local guide has good knowledge of the current community locations. We recommend this package for adventurous budget travellers who prioritise the experience over guaranteed encounter rates.
Can I add Queen Elizabeth NP to this trip?
Yes — Kalinzu is very close to Queen Elizabeth NP (30 minutes). Adding a half-day or full-day game drive in QE can be arranged for an additional park entry fee ($50 pp). Just ask us to add it. Seeing tree-climbing lions and hippos on the Kazinga Channel alongside Kalinzu chimps makes this an excellent budget combo.
