What Happens on a Chimp Trek

From the first pant-hoot echo to the walk back through dappled light, every hour in the forest is a story. Here is how the day unfolds.

Pre-Dawn Briefing

You arrive at Kanyanchu Visitor Centre at 7:00 AM for a thorough briefing from a Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger. Group size is maximum 8 people. Your guide explains chimp behaviour, photography rules, and how to move quietly in the forest.

Forest Tracking

Trackers radio ahead to locate the chimp community. You follow your guide along forest trails — listening for drumming, watching for swinging branches overhead. The search itself is part of the experience: you will pass colobus monkeys, forest birds, and ancient fig trees.

The Encounter

You spend one hour with the habituated community (standard trek) or a full day (habituation experience). Watch chimps feeding on figs, grooming each other, chasing, vocalising. The 7-metre distance rule applies — though chimps are not always aware of this rule.

Afternoon Options

After the morning trek, your afternoon is full of choice. The Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk (2 hours, 8 primate species) is our most recommended add-on. Optional afternoon trek, crater lake walk by bicycle, or simply rest at your lodge listening to the forest.

Evening at the Lodge

As light fades through the canopy, chimps build their night nests high in the trees. Your evening is spent at a Kibale forest lodge — many overlook the trees, and on good evenings you will hear the chimps calling their goodnights across the canopy.

Physical Preparation

Standard chimp treks are moderate — 2 to 4 hours of walking on forest paths. Sturdy walking boots with ankle support, long-sleeved clothing (green or brown tones), insect repellent, and a rain jacket are essential. A porter ($10–15) is strongly recommended and supports the local community.
