1. Mabamba Bay Wetland

The shoebill capital of the world, a short drive and canoe ride from Entebbe. The obvious opening chapter of any Uganda birding trip.

2. Queen Elizabeth National Park

With over 600 recorded species, this is the single richest protected area for birds in East Africa. The Kazinga Channel boat cruise alone delivers pelicans, skimmers, herons, and African skimmers by the hundred.

Famous for gorillas, but every bit as important for birders: this is prime territory for several Albertine Rift endemics, including the African green broadbill and Shelley's crimsonwing.

5. Kibale National Park

Best known for chimpanzee tracking, Kibale's forest also holds around 375 bird species, including the notoriously elusive green-breasted pitta — a genuine trophy sighting for visiting birders.

6. Murchison Falls National Park

The Nile's most dramatic stretch, where the river is forced through a narrow gorge. The surrounding savannah and riverbank habitat support Goliath herons, shoebills, and huge concentrations of bee-eaters nesting in the riverbanks.

7. Lake Mburo National Park

A compact park mixing acacia woodland with wetland, and one of the easiest places in Uganda to find the African finfoot, papyrus gonolek, and both white-headed and spot-flanked barbets.
